At kransfontein

Walking and hiking along the paths of the farm. Enjoy the views and natural beauty of Kransfontein. You can do so independently or on a guided tour.

Visit the deli. You may find our on-site tasting room and shop much to your liking. Olive oils and other foodstuffs produced right here at Kransfontein are available for sale at the deli.

Our multiple award winning olive oil is cold pressed on the Estate. Kransfontein’s Coratina oil won the Absa Top 5 Award an unprecedented three years in succession. Our Frantoio oil has been awarded the Marco Zichella Award for South Africa’s best olive oil.

Enjoy a picnic down by the river and play a round of croquet at the riverside venue. Consult the manager on the rules of the game and rent mallets and balls at reception.

Evening entertainment at the amphitheatre, consult the manager on upcoming evening events.

Enjoy a boat trip down the river in boats piloted by the manager or trained staff. (Kransfontein has 3 speed boats and a “cocktail-cruising” boat.)

Water-ski the day away. Please ask the manager if there is availability for ski trips. Whether you are a crack skier or want to learn from scratch, you can book an hour or two.

Picnic breakfast in the pecan nut grove. Every morning you will receive a freshly prepared continental picnic basket. Feel free to wonder far afield on the farm and find a serene and romantic location to enjoy your breakfast.

Braai at the rock pool. If you tire of using the braai facilities at your cottage, book the rock pool braai. This braai is exclusive to guests of Kransfontein and is best booked upon arrival or soon thereafter.

Enjoy the bird life. We have more than 100 confirmed bird species of the farm. Download our birding list and see if you can add to it. If you do find a species which is not on the list, please inform the manager and the revised list will accredit you with the spot.

At Riethuiskraal Stud some 50 foals are born every breeding season, from the beginning of August to the end of November. The foals are weaned from their mothers only in April. The manager will gladly take you on a tour of this internationally renowned stud farm.

The stud owner has bred Crimson Palace, the first South African filly to win a Group 1 race in the USA and was rated the 4th best filly that year in the world. National Colour was South Africa’s Horse of the Year, South Africa’s Champion Sprinter and the Highest Rated filly in the Southern Hemisphere.

There are many others. Several members of these celebrated families are broodmares on the farm. You are not likely to forget the experience.

Of course, you could also pour a drink, read a book from the library of the house you’re staying in, watch Netflix or your favourite history or sport channel, or sit on the sumptuous stoep, admiring the stunning view.

In the area

The coastal town of Stilbaai is a mere 15 kilometer drive along a scenic road.

Explore the marine life in the rock pools at Stilbaai. The manager will take you on a biological tour of the rock pool life as well as a historic tour of the “vis-vywers”, believed to be the oldest structures built by humans.

Should you wish to go further afield and strike out on your own, there are some nearby activities and destinations we recommend. For the biking or 4×4 enthusiasts, we recommend you follow the road further upriver. The road is a meandering pass that will take you right through to Riversdale.

For the nature lovers, we recommend whale watching. There is a dedicated lookout point for spotting whales (June to October), which also provides a sweeping view of the bay. For those wanting some sun, sea and surf, we recommend a beach trip.

Drive alongside the river and across the Stilbaai bridge, turn right to Lappiesbaai, a blue flag beach that offers great swimming and surfing, with miles of sandy shores and a restaurant for refreshments. For those of you who prefer calmer waters, look no further than the sandy river mouth for tanning, fishing and drifting. The extended sandy shore of the estuary is famous for the touch rugby festival held on 26 December every year.

For the historically inclined, there is a Boer War monument, some four kilometers after you have passed PUTSTOP on the way to the N2. The monument honours the Southernmost battlefield of the Boer War.

The drive to the mouth of the Duivenhoks River takes you past Blombos. Should you wish to have a 14km walk on one of the most pristine beaches South Africa can offer, Blombos is your spot.

A tasting tour of the famous Gin Distillery of Inverroche never fails to excite, so too the cheese factory at Kasselshoop.

For the adventurous ̶ a day of deep sea fishing with professional fishermen, especially organized for guests of Kransfontein.
